Chapter Eleven

A little red-haired girl in a pink nightgown crouched at Faolan’s feet, tears trailing down her soft cheeks to form paths on her dirty face. The darkened maze of trees seemed to loom over the child. But her terror showed clear in the flickering light of the magical orb cupped in her hands. Monsters from her deepest nightmares, ones who’d killed her parents, hunted her. Worse, they’d found her.

Faolan, the most skilled assassin of the Fae, had found her.

He knew others had already taken out the child’s parents. They were the priority targets on this mission. Intel said that the witch and warlock had developed a debilitating curse to be used against the Fae, one that threatened to bring the wars to an abrupt and bloody end. The queen ordered the elimination of the entire family before their work could be used or passed to others.

So Faolan stared down at the horror gripping this girl, a girl five, maybe six mortal years old. Light green eyes shone out of the round, baby-soft face. So alone and so innocent, her life would end in a dark forest filled with terror.

God and Goddess, how had his noble race come to this, to murdering children in the night? That was the job of the Dark Fae, not his people.

Faolan glanced down at the deadly glow enveloping his hands, a hex ready to be released. Could he do this? Could he actually snuff out this young life for no other reason than what ethnic group she’d been born into and what her parents may or may not have taught her?

But what would happen to him if he reported back to his mother after disobeying a direct royal decree? It would be the third time he’d rebelled against her. Refusing his arranged marriage and talking about peace was one thing. Flagrant disobedience of Her Majesty in a time of war was another.

“Please,” the child begged, her voice breaking with the power of her sobs. “Don’t hurt me. I’ll be good.”
